The group of field and plantation crops those are grown specially for sugar production are known as sugar crops, such as sugarcane,date palm,Palmyra palm,golpata,sugar beet.etc.

    Sugarcane is very industrial crop;accounting for about 66% of sugar production in the world.It is also a very important agro industrial crop in Bangladesh.Depending upon sugar production many sugar mills were established in Bangladesh.Sugarcane is known as IKKHU
 in our country & main source of sugar & gur in Bangladesh.The by-products of sugar industry have many uses.For example,bagasse & molasses are used as fuel & for alcohol production,respectively.The contribution of sugarcane in national GDP is 0.78%.About 5 million people depend upon sugarcane cultivation in our country.

    Sugarcane is a perennial tropical grass with a solid stem of an appreciable length and. It is cultivated for these solid stems or canes, from which sugar is extracted.It is long durated summer crop.

 Sugarcane is considered to be originated in India.In Bangladesh,the major sugarcane growing districts are Rajshahi,Kustia,Jessore,Dinajpur,Rangpur,Faridpur,Mymensingh,Tangail,Jamalpur,Dhaka.

Sugarcane is a long duration crop,grow best in hot & sunny areas.High land with well drained loamy  neutral soils are good for sugarcane.It is propagated by sett(stem cutting of sugarcane used for propagation).Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute has released 36 sugarcane varieties.


                                                        



                                               DATE PALM(Phoenix sylvestris)

Date palm,Phoenix sylvestris L.,is one of tha oldest fruit trees in the world &
is mentioned in Quran & Bible.The fruit of date palm is delicious & sweet.
The date palm is a palm in the genus Phoenix, cultivated for its edible sweet fruit. Although its place of origin is unknown because of long cultivation, it probably originated from lands around the Persian Gulf.[1] It is a medium-sized plant, 15–25 m tall, growing singly or forming a clump with several stems from a single root system. The leaves are 3–5 m long, with spines on the petiole, and pinnate, with about 150 leaflets; the leaflets are 30 cm long and 2 cm wide. The full span of the crown ranges from 6 to 10 m. Dates contain 20-70 calories each, depending on size and species.
