Oil Seed Crops

The group of crops containing oil & fatty acids in their seeds and the oil is extracted from their seeds either as vegetable or industrial oil are known a oilseed crops.Such as mustard,sesame,sunflower,groundnut,soybean,etc.

Mustard is an important edible oilseed crops in Bangladesh,commonly known as sarisha that contain oil & protein in their seeds.It attains first position among oilseed crops in terms of both area & cultivation. It is well known for its versatile uses.Oil-cake is used as both cattle feed & organic fertilizer.Dry plant is also used as fuel.

Mustard have believed to be originated in China(Brassica juncea) & Afganistan(Brassica campestris).In Bangladesh it is grown all over the country.Mustard grown in Bangladesh comprises three species viz.

                                                   1.Brassica campestris
                                                   2.Brassica napus
                                                   3.Brassica juncea

Soybean is one of the important oilseed crop as pulse crop of the world.Its seeds contain appreciable amount of high quality of protein and edible oil .Its oil is very popular as cooking oil. it is a promising crop of in Bangladesh.Soybean produced in our country is used for making nutritious items such soyadal, soyakhichuri,soyamisti,soyamilk,soyapolao,soyacake,soyabiscuits etc.The varieties of soybean recommended for cultivation in  Bangladesh are Shohag & Bangladesh soybean 4, the last one is high  yield potential
